Two Flying Dreams
The following dreams come from Josie, who was in a process of personal growth and change at the time. A turbulent relationship had come to an end, and she was feeling more peaceful and integrated. The afternoon before meeting with her ex-partner to finish saying anything that was unfinished between them, she had the first of two remarkable dreams. This one happened while she was sitting in a meditative state:
Dream report: Fast Flight to an Island
I was flying very low and incredibly fast over the sea. I was in total control of the speed, and able to turn easily. I flew up to a small volcanic island with a cone peak. I lifted up and around it effortlessly, descended again, and continued to fly on. I then saw ahead of me this fairytale castle like the Disney one. As I flew close to it, the dream ended, and I woke up.
My significant memory is of the speed – I was travelling so fast!
She found this quite amazing, unlike anything she had experienced before.
The second dream came six weeks later, when she had begun a new relationship which felt like “groundbreaking stuff.” Life was exciting and full of promise.
Dream report: Taking Off Into Space
I was flying straight up away from earth, up into space. The speed was unbelievable, so fast, like the speed of sound. I flew vertically for some time, and then I became frightened, so I made a U-turn, and flew straight down at the same speed back to earth. I could clearly see the earth as I descended towards it. Then I made the choice to turn again, and head straight back out into space. I flew much further out this time, and I remember the feeling of absolute awe of the stars around me, and the blackness of space. I continued to fly out, and then I woke up.
The only meaning I have attributed to these dreams is that they were affirming dreams about how far I had travelled in my personal journey, and they spoke to me about being on the right track, more “out there” than I had ever allowed myself to be before. They were positive symbols of the skills I had learned and started putting to use in my life. My new relationship has been a steep learning curve, turbulent, with highs and lows, and lots of new stuff to deal with.
I have not had similar dreams before or since.
Both dreams have the feeling of being a spirit out-of-body, which some would call astral travelling. Alternatively, they might be a kind of lucid dream, in which the dreamer feels awake and in control during a vivid sensory dream. They certainly have a paranormal quality, which goes beyond current explanations.
