Phyllis, a Christian woman in her 60s, had been through a very stressful period in her life, and felt deeply concerned about a family situation. In the hour or so before dawn she was praying for strength to face a demanding event when she had a powerful spiritual experience in the form of a dream.
Dream report: The Healing Vortex
I felt as though I was sitting alongside a monk in dark robes with a cowl, an older man from long ago. He put his hands on my head and blessed me with a healing touch. Then it seemed that water came out of me from inside, all over me from head to feet, flowing out and down and away from me, but I didn’t feel wet. I felt amazed! Then I had the feeling of a vortex swirling around me. I was in the middle of it being physically pulled up and out of it with a powerful suction. I felt lifted right up and out of it. I woke up, astonished! Then I felt very calm and peaceful, as if a lot of heaviness had gone – as if something raw inside me had been healed.
I felt quietly strong. I had been freed of a lot of anger, grief, fear, pain and helplessness – it was all gone – and I was able to face the demands ahead with calm trust and confidence.
I’ve never had an experience like this before.
This seems to be an archetypal experience of being washed clean and lifted to a higher level by a “wind of the spirit.” A monk is a traditional Christian figure of wisdom or healing, who seems to have been sent to deliver the blessing in response to her prayer. This was no ordinary dream, having strong sensory components that give the experience an unforgettable intensity. The inner transformation she experienced as a result has been a lasting gift.
